Introduction to the Launceston Reptile Club

Welcome to the Tasmanian Herpetological Societies Reptile Club blogsite
The Reptile Club was established around 2000-2001 By the Snake Man Ian Davies a Northwest Coast snake enthusiast, and herpetologist and Director of Research on the Wesley Vale Project, Jane Guy, from the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery.

The aims and objectives of the club was to create a venue where budding herpetologists could meet bi-monthly and share interest in their science on all things reptile and amphibian.
The Reptile Club has a range of activities and guest speakers, engaging with attendees on a range of topics, with live reptiles being brought to meetings to educate and familiarise young folk on the joys of herpetoculture (the keeping of reptiles).

Hi,
Yes the Launceston Reptile club still meets on the first Tuesday of every 2nd month between October and April. We go into our own 'winter torpa' during the winter months! Our meetings are held at the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery at Inveresk starting at 6:00pm, followed by the Tasmanian Herpetological Society meeting at 7:30pm. Feel free to attend one or both! Our next meeting is on Tuesday February 7th.

Is there any news as to making pythons legal here in tas? I've been hearing for years now that it should be soon but never seems to happen.

Hi there,
The importation laws regarding pythons and other reptiles not native to Tasmania have not been passed yet and thanks to the current financial climate in the government departments involved in passing the legislation, it doesn't look like it will be happening any time soon. Long time researcher and lobbiest Ian Norton and his collegues have been trying to get the legislation passed for going on 30 years now to no avail. Please contact DIPWE to find out further information on the legislation.

Thankyou for your comment.
Sally Wilson.

Hi, my boys and I attended our first gathering tonight and we had a great time. We were especially impressed with the welcoming and the enthusiasm of other attendees.
The young boy who presented his PowerPoint was outstanding. His demeanor and poise with the younger kids was a credit to him. We look forward to coming back in October.
